Avoch Gala at the Community Centre on 1st August

The aim of this year’s Avoch Gala was to raise as much money as possible for the refurbishment of the Community Centre - to make it more user-friendly.
On Thursday evening there was a Kiddies’ Disco, ably run by Joyce and Annie. The star of the show was 3-years-old Mitchell Reid - Avoch’s answer to John Travolta!
There was a fairly well attended Prize Bingo session on Friday night, and our thanks go to our caller, Anne Harding.
And then came the big day, Saturday, and the crowning of the Gala Herring Queen. At 1pm the royal entourage arrived and our lovely Queen, Megan Oag, attended by pretty Millie McLean and handsome Solomon Baarda, was piped to the stage by Sean Kellman. After opening remarks from Janice MacLeman the’scroll’ was read by Bob McIlwraith and the Queen was then crowned by ‘local celebrity’, Arthur MacArthur, who gave a short speech. megan the declared the Gala open.
Instead of the usual dance, there was a quiz in the evening, with much hilarity and thoroughly enjoyed by a record number of contestants. Quizmaster was Gordon Killbourne.
The Grand Raffle was then drawn and a list of prizewinners has been published.
The Gala Committee has asked us to thank everyone who donated in any way and has told us that a net total of £1,700 was raised.
As usual, lots of people contributed and helped out in many ways, but particular mention should surely be made of Janice MacLeman and the Gala Committee, which included David Skinner, Margaret Williamson, Joyce Skinner and Annie Owens. Many thanks to them all for all their considerable efforts.
